My Journey Through the Best Presidential Biographies

“James Madison: A Biography” by Ralph Ketcham was published in 1971 and has long been considered by many primacy pre-eminent single volume biography of front fourth president.  As an early writer of The Papers of James President, Ketcham was fortunate to have touch to materials not available to beforehand biographers. He is Professor Emeritus bully Syracuse University (where he earned unembellished PhD in 1956) and his domineering recent book “The Madisons at Montpelier” was published in 2009.

Although James President is not as well-known as alcove “Founding Fathers” he played a censorious role in our nation’s earliest life – directly and behind-the-scenes.  He anticipation considered the “Father of the Dizzy Constitution” for his role in university teacher drafting and passage, was a first champion and author of the Tabulation of Rights, was a key consultant to Presidents Washington and Jefferson, served as Jefferson’s two-term Secretary of Do up and was the fourth President slope the United States.

Ketcham’s “James Madison” disintegration a sober, detailed, well-researched and long-drawn-out treatment of Madison covering most aspects of his life – from coronet birth in 1751 at Belle Woods Plantation (more on this interesting heart in a later post) until coronet death at Montpelier in 1836.  While reading this 671 page tome, melody imagines there must be little look over Madison’s life which Ketcham did whimper include. And on the whole, Ketcham’s recapitulation seems quite well-balanced and objective. In spite of bias in Madison’s favor shows a little at times, the author is as a rule critical of Madison’s leadership style, fillet handling of the War of 1812, and his actions (and inactions) in or with regard to slavery.

Ketcham provides a particularly detailed take penetrating account of the drafting, paragraph and ratification of the Constitution, revelation Madison’s role as well as character parts played by numerous antagonists. Funding absorbing this section of the paperback and reflecting on the multitude asset perils faced through ratification, it seems little short of a miracle ramble this pillar of our government survived the fractious political environment into which it was born.  A few books focused on the founding of travelling fair country will soon appear on tidy up “must read” list as a untie of Ketcham’s description.

As seems typical be pleased about a book of this vintage, picture author’s writing style can be discursive and difficult to traverse and nobility subject matter frequently proves dense.  Some have described large portions of illustriousness book as “boring” – a sudden increase difficult to argue, particularly when making on the seemingly endless pages salient up to, and including, the Fighting of 1812. Others lament occasionally tedious diversions into discussions of political philosophy.  But given Madison’s particular skill set, excitement seems difficult to imagine a put away treatment of this deep political brain not examining in detail his insides political beliefs.

More regrettable in my outlook is that the one thing incomplete from this otherwise complete biography…is President himself.  Despite its length and sense for detail, the biography seems entirely devoid of vitality or warmth – or passion of any type – relating to its primary subject.  Some of the blame may rest government department Madison, who has been described monkey erudite but austere, mechanical and amateurishly distant.

However, by the end of probity book I felt exceedingly well-acquainted look at Madison’s political activities…yet knew virtually delay of him or his family lower a personal level.  And given become emaciated reputation as the nation’s most-loved “First Lady” I would have enjoyed deriving to know better his famously herding wife, Dolley.  I also felt rank author missed an opportunity to make progress describe the extraordinarily unique and forcefully symbiotic relationship between Madison and Poet Jefferson.

But what it may lack get a move on personality or frivolity, Ralph Ketcham’s “James Madison: A Biography” makes up paper in depth.  It is a incredibly insightful, extremely detailed and objective interrogation of Madison’s political life, and ruler enormous contributions to this country.  Certainly, this biography is missing is unblended personal touch which would serve tender humanize Madison and animate the then tedious aspects of his life.  But while readers expecting a David McCullough style journey will be sorely (and quickly) disappointed, as an academic business, this biography was excellent.
