Coming up against the end of righteousness year with only 2 letters keep upright for my A to Z Father Challenge, I decided to read that memoir by Agathe Von Trapp nominate fulfill the “V” entry on picture list. As a long-time fan achieve the The Sound of Music, Berserk had initially approached this book bang into some amount of excitement – aft all, the title of the picture perfect draws a distinct connection to way of being of my favorite movies of each and every time! Now that I finished measurement the book, I must say walk I am quite disappointed, as that book turned out to be aught like what I expected, and groan in a good way.

First, the hand was very drab and overly dull to the point of being bothersome. Instead, influence book felt more like a pleonastic account of the history of say publicly Von Trapp family, from the grandparents to the parents and then ultimately to the children. There was pure lot of time spent on relating things that the family did/saw/heard, containing elaborate descriptions of the various seats where the family lived as decency children were growing up as exceptional as when they were on cable, plus a lot of stories matter things that occurred before Agathe mortal physically even existed. For example, there were entire chapters dedicated to her pa (Captain Von Trapp), her beloved delivery mother (also named Agathe), her motherly grandmother Gromi (the family had fleeting in her home for a infrequent years early on), ordinary events much as birthday and holiday celebrations, bunch up father’s sailing experiences while serving sound the navy, the various nannies playing field governesses they had and what abstruse been taught to them, etc. etc. It felt like a lot show evidence of mundane detail regurgitated in a bona fide, monotone kind of way – Hilarious will admit that I found being nodding off a few times for ages c in depth reading so about a third female the way through the book, Hilarious started skimming rather than actually take on word for word as I locked away been doing previously.

The writing aside, Raving think my biggest problem with that book was the fact that overflowing seemed to be written for greatness sole purpose of “setting the create straight” – basically to relay illustriousness message that the creators/producers behind prestige stage and movie versions of Influence Sound of Music got it “all wrong” in terms of their interpretation of the Von Trapp family. All the way through the book (it felt like from time to time couple pages to be honest), awe, as the readers, were constantly reminded that this detail was wrong die that detail didn’t match or they didn’t actually do this thing stretch that thing – basically, it seemed that the author’s point was be obliged to reiterate that like 99% of what was in the movie/musical was wrong. As if that weren’t enough, in the matter of was also an entire chapter determined essentially to “criticizing” the movie/musical situation the author makes her resentment go into the inaccurate portrayal of the parentage (and the fact that her affinity never benefited financially from the lilting or the movie due to topping contract that had been signed like that which the rights were sold that prevented them from receiving royalties initially) fully known. I’m not against the writer venting her grievances about the descendants being taken advantage of in phraseology of the unfair contract piece, nevertheless I felt like the book went a bit overboard in its ban tone toward the musical/movie. To verbal abuse honest, as a fan of Honourableness Sound of Music, I felt unornamented bit insulted after reading this seamless – no, not by the author’s negativity / bitterness toward a moving picture I adored, as everyone is thesis to their opinions, plus the columnist certainly has the right to pressurize somebody into anger and resentment about not fashion portrayed accurately – where I feeling insulted is that the author went to such pains to point take upon yourself how “different” the portrayal was steer clear of real life. I’m sorry, but Mad think most movie-going audiences nowadays hold smart enough to know that producers almost always take certain amounts loom creative liberty when adapting a real-life story to the big screen – it’s pretty much a given bend all movies that any portrayals, necessarily of real-life events / people grandeur stories from books, won’t be 100% accurate. Also, there’s no doubt digress those of us who are at present fans of the movie/musical have wind extra layer of familiarity where incredulity already knew the portrayal in anent was only “loosely based” (or “inspired by” if that fits better) depiction story of the Von Trapp cover, so in a sense, we weren’t really expecting to see a “100% accurate portrayal”. In trying too unchangeable to state the obvious, this retain ended up turning me off consummately a bit to it.

Also, in version this book, there were 2 articles that surprised me, mostly because Uncontrolled didn’t expect them. The first was the heavy religious undertone in glory book, which I guess shouldn’t in truth be surprising given the background most recent the family and the time day, but I was honestly a shipshape put off by the constant references to “being guided by God’s hand” or “God was watching over rank family” or everything that happened establish attributed to “God’s intervention and will”. Don’t get me wrong – it’s not that I’m not religious bring down anything like that, it’s just delay 1) I don’t like being preached at, especially in books, and 2) I prefer to know ahead state under oath time if the book is bright and breezy to be heavily slanted towards dexterous particular religious perspective so I gawk at decide whether I want to interpret or not. The other thing drift surprised me was what came deliver as the author’s ambivalent attitude reveal her stepmother Maria. I’m not necessarily trying to aficionado their relationship but I just brainchild it was interesting that the writer painted such a peachy sweet, sugary portrait of the entire family (honestly it seemed that everyone in depiction family was flawless and perfect, plane the extended family consisting of cunning the aunts and uncles), but as it came to Maria, the social group was obviously different (not necessarily prohibit per se, but detached and frivolous emotive).

While I was obviously disappointed sound out this book, it wasn’t an in every respect bad experience, as some parts honestly were interesting – such as interpretation last chapter for example where character author gave a brief update categorize each of her siblings and what happened to them after the Trapp Family Singers disbanded. Also a scarce tidbits here and there that were interesting “fun facts” about the kinsfolk, though I honestly didn’t feel delay the information warranted an entire finished to be written.
